Poppin’ Tarts In The Kitchen

You know what? My identical twin Stephanie and I are a little irked that we did not book the role of Michelle on Full House or the roles Tia and Tamera scored on Sister, Sister!

Alas, we have since toilet papered the casting director’s houses gotten over it and now make YouTube videos… Did you know Stephanie fills in for me when I am not feeling quite up to make a video? I bet you didn’t because people truly have a had time telling us apart!

GiGi Dubois and Stephanie Taylor

Well, look at us now! On screen, TOGETHER, for the first, and definitely not the last, time!

The reason for the DOUBLE TROUBLE… Is because we are celebrating BIRTHDAY WEEK! Not only is it our birthday this week (uh… What was June 26th?) but it’s also our OTHER sister, Daniele’s birthday too!

Daniele Eating Unagi

Daniele requested we re-create a heart-stopping old favorite snack that she (and I) have not eaten in… Oh about 12 years, if not longer.

As you all very well know, I do not eat wheat, dairy, gluten, sugar, soy, nuts, eggs and fruits (except for very low sugar ones), and neither does Daniele. Stephanie, yes, she eats some of these things BUT… She is a VEGAN! How TWIN SISTERS could have such different eating habits is BEYOND ME!

That being said, Stephanie and I had to concoct a HEALTHY POP TART RECIPE, that everyone’s stomach could enjoy… Watch the video to see if we accomplish this American Ninja Warrior like challenge…

These may look like avocado stuffed tortillas, but boy will your taste buds be confused when you take a bite!

  • If you were a pop tart flavor, what flavor would you be and why?
  • Do you stash a box or two of pop tarts in your closet so you don’t have to share with anyone?
  • Can you guess the average amount of calories in 2 pop tarts?
  • Do you have a sister? Or better yet, do you have a twin?
  • Full House or Sister, Sister?
  • Have you gotten rid of trans fatty acids from your diet? What about high fructose corn syrup?
  • OMG I just realized… Pop Tarts are TWINS TOO!!! Two identical tarts per package!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO MY AMAZING SISTER, DANIELE… I love you very very very much, and I hope you enjoy this recipe…. And of course HAPPY BIRTHDAY to my OTHER STUNNING SISTER, STEPHANIE!!!

  1. Happy birthday all around!! I’m so intrigued by these healthy Poptarts! I used to love Poptarts until I learned that I was basically eating pure sugar and other questionable things.

Pshh, those casting directors did not even know what they were missing! Casting Lindsay Lohan to play both twins The Parent Trap? Worst decision ever.

    • RIGHT?!?!?! COMMON PARENT TRAP CDs! Steph & I would have been PHENOMENAL for that movie! Their loss, LOL! I won’t be sharing this recipe with them, LOL! 😉

  2. i’d be a birthday cake or cake batter poptart ooooooobviously! :)

  3. What if I don’t have sunwarrior? Is this recipe low carb(girl, you know I’m on keto).

And you are so funny, I can definitrly see you as twins. Two girls with huge personalities!

    • This recipe is very low carb, yes! :) And you can use any protein powder really… I mean, the flavor may change a bit since every powder tastes a bit different – but it’s all about experimenting!

The crust by itself is damn good! ha ha!

  4. Pop Tarts were a rare “treat” and I actually liked that outer edge crust more than anything else. I was always a strawberry girl.

    • The CRUST of this pop tart rendition is AWESOME – so if that’s the part you like best (which is totally what I liked the best too)… Then just bake the crust part! and EAT 😀

  5. Happy Birthday to you and your sisters :-)
I never had Pop-Tarts – I live in Germany – and looking at the recipe I will have to be creative, I think. Most of the ingredients have other names/are other brands over here, but I might give it a try.

Such a fun post, made me smile :)

    • Yes! This recipe is all about experimentation! So definitely give it a shot and see what happens. It’s definitely a weekend activity!

  6. Yum! I used to have a major addiction to cinnamon and brown sugar pop tarts. Now that I’m trying to eat healthier I’ve been avoiding buying them. But these pop tarts, I think I could handle!

    • Oh me too, me too! But that was about 12 to 15 years ago, thank goodness! These are quite addicting though too, but at least their NUTRITION PACKED :) Give them a try!

  7. Hey, this looks like an interesting low carb recipe. Thanks for sharing.
And I enjoyed the fun vibe of your post.

  8. You two are so very lovely.

I used to sneak over to my neighbor’s house to eat pop tarts…mom never kept them in the house. Such a delicious indulgence, but I love that this recipe isn’t as…indulgent.

    • Oh you sound A LOT like me! I used to go to my friend’s house and I would eat ALL her junk food, including the pop tarts, ha ha! 😉

  9. I am going to give this a try because I am a HUGE fan of Poptart but they are caloric bombs. And I have the ingredients.

  10. I love that you included these may look like avocado stuffed tortillas. I will pretend that you said that after my comment about them, because I want to feel cool and somewhat included in this sister cluster fuck. These do look good, I think my favorite part is the crust!! THAT IS AWESOME, and protein for DAYS! I def get down on the maple and brown sugar too..so tantalizing. I’ve totally creeped on the actual Poptarts as you know, and if I recall aren’t two of them around 300-400 cal? I think closer to 300? Anyway…they look so good, but I always refrain! HAHA. VEGAN POWER!

    • I NEED TO CREDIT YOU for calling these tortillas filled avocado!!! WTF AM I TRYING TO PULL HERE! You should sue me for copyright! LOL!

  11. Happy Birthday to EVERYONE, even if it’s not yo birthday, because these pop tarts deserve a celebration 😀
I can’t remember the last time I had a pop tart but now it’s all I’m thinking about haha
I have a sister but she’s 7 years younger than I am so we’re not exactly twins yet. Maybe one day tho lol
    Thanks for sharing!

    • RIGHT?!?! Today I am dubbing POP TART DAY!!! Actually, I think it’s national junk food day anyways, or maybe that was yesterday… But still, LOL!!!

And I have a friend who has a sister who is 7 years younger, and they are definitely a lot closer now then when they were younger. It’s funny how age doesn’t really matter when you get older :)

  12. Very creative recipe-you never fail to entertain! :)

  13. That is awesome girl!

    • :) I am glad you approve. You should re-create them, and take BEAUTIFUL photos of them, cause that’s what you do!

  14. Those look so tasty! YUM. And it’s too difficult to pick between full house and sister, sister – I love them both!

  15. Love it! I Your pics and video made me want to be there with you making it. Happy birthday!

    • Thank YOU :) And yes, if you live in the LA area, or plan to visit in the near future, WE CAN TOTALLY MAKE THAT HAPPEN! ha ha!

  16. Happy Birthday to all of your sisters :) Interesting concept. I can’t remember the last time I had a poptart! I liked the brown sugar variety.

    • Ugh, the brown sugar ones were the BEST – however, have you seen the flavors they have out these days! I really want to try Birthday Cake! LOL

  17. You know I love EVERYTHING twins!!! And you and yours are just adorable & surely identical. How do people tell you apart???
I used to eat cinnamon pop-tarts by the box load when I was in college – hot, cold, whatever. Gross!!! I love this adult version…now if I could just get someone to make them for me.

    • TWINS! :) I feel like you are the only one who could ever possibly tell Steph and I apart since you’re a TWIN PRO!

And if you ask really really really nicely… That certain someone MAY be able to make these tarts for you! 😉

  18. I mean… you and your twin are identical!! I can’t even tell you guys apart in the least. Happy birthdays all around!!

  19. Happy birthday week! Your videos are always entertaining! I haven’t had pop tarts in so long and these are making me crave some right now! I like strawberry flavor because I love berries!

  20. Happy birthday to all the sisters! I have a sister but I’m convinced aliens dropped her from another planet – we could not be more different, lol.
These pop tarts look delicious and I’m a raspberry flavour because I crave them ALL the time.
You guys are SO cute together!

    • Ah ha ha ha ha! My sister and I are pretty different, but that only makes me love her more! :)

And you can have ALL the Raspberry Flavored Pop Tarts, I never liked those ones! LOL!

  21. Sister, Sister! I totally have a crush on Steph. Her guns are mad sexy.

  22. I have never tasted a Pop Tart! Too busy pushing chocolate into my mouth!

    • OMG I AM THRILLED to hear this!!! Don’t go out and purchase a box out of curiosity, instead… MAKE THESE :)

  23. OEMGEEEE – that crust is insanely mind-blowing and taste bud-stimulating – protein powder water and coconut butter?! WOW – pure genius!
I would have to go with an avocado-chocolate filling – cos well, am all about the chocolate!
Happy Birth-day/week to all you lovely ladies…GiGi – I think you and Stephanie need to go into the healthy pop tart making business – I will buy a case for sure!!!

    • AHHH FUNNY you should say that Shashi, because Steph and I were thinking the same thing, LOL!!

And let me just tell you, Steph and I……… LOVED THE CRUST so much, we could NOT stop munching on the left over pieces, he he he! It’s a must make!

  24. Wow what a task to come up with Pop Tarts without so many things — I’m impressed! When I ate Pop Tarts, the s’mores variety was my favorite, followed by brown sugar and then cherry.
I’m visiting from A Humble Bumble’s Healthy Tuesday Hop, and Happy Birthweek to all of you!

    • Hmmmmmmmmmmmm Brown sugar, the best :) but this re-creation definitely tastes pretty darn good! :) I hope you try them and enjoy!!

  25. Sorry can’t watch the vid now since I’m at work so maybe you mention, but do these hold up to freezing???

    • YES THEY DO! I froze the left overs (I had to, or else I would have chowed down on the ENTIRE recipe, lol)… And I ate the rest for dessert last night, tasted wonderful still :)

  26. HAPPY HAPPY BIRTHDAY to all of you! This pop tart looks amazing!

  27. s’mores were my favorite pop tarts, but I can’t even remember the last time I had one! My sister and I are Irish Twins only 13 months apart!

  28. I had no idea you could make healthy pop tarts! This is an amazing idea I need to try.

  29. AH this is fabulous and uses such eclectic ingredients, LOVING the avocado filling! I’m lazy and would never make this though 😛 BUT if I were a flavor, I’d be peanut butter chocolate OR cake batter :)

    • Ha Ha! The recipe only looks daunting but, once you have all the ingredients laid out.. It’s actually pretty simple. And you know what? The crust along rocks – screw the filling, just top the crust with something delicious! 😉

  30. i thought you were my twin?! what?! hehe. and i’m all about avocado tortilla looking pop tarts. The uglier, the better tasting!

    • TRIPLETS?!?!?! Yes! We can be triplets.

And you couldn’t be more right, the uglier the food, the TASTIER IT IS!!!!!

  31. Wow you’re so right, couldnt even tell you apart for the first couple of photos! :p

But oh man unfortunately I do know there’s about 400 calories in two measley poptarts, gasp, as I use to eat them every day and was digusted at it later haha :)

But wahhh I want these so badly but I just started a 21 day sigar detox of NO SUGAR AT ALL. NO HONEY, SUGAR or STEVIA (which means no flavored protein powders either! ). Booo. I have made a healthy poptart using quest bars before though :)

xoxo Sarah Grace, Fresh Fit N Healthy.

  32. Aw, happy birthday to your sister! I haven’t had a Pop-Tart in… AGES. Since the high school vending machine was in my life? The calories are astonishing for such a little treat. My favorite was always strawberry with the white frosting and multicolor “sprinkles” :)

    • OMG I remember the days of middle school/high school vending machines – HEAVEN… Except… Artery Clogging – so really the treats will send you to heaven quickly, LOL!

  33. Well, I really do have a twin but he looks less like me than you and Stephanie (who, BTW, has incredible arms!!!).
I love Pop-Tarts even though I rarely eat them. Maybe I should try your healthier version:)

    • AHHH HA HA AH AH AH AHA HA! I am having a very hard time picturing your twin! LOL! And right? Steph’s guns are CRAZY! She needs a permit for those bad girls! LOL!

  34. Ok I’m a strawberry rhubarb pop tart :) I never buy pop tarts but they are considered survival food because of the high calorie count, I think two are around 800. No sisters or family but have cat’s !! Yep crazy cat guy. Ok miss fancy pants, you will have to make these and send them C.O.D. because my baking skills are limited. I only eat meats a veggies along with protein bars. Great picture of you and your other sis, I bet you two raised hell at home :) Looking forward to more vids lady’s

  35. I haven’t had a poptart in YEARS….decade maybe?! This sounds like such a better option. Yum!!

    • Make these this weekend, and you will be brought back to the years when you used to pop them in your mouth! :)

  36. What an amazing idea! Hmmm now for me to turn shakey into a baked good!

    • I was going to use it as the filling actually!!!! I wanted to use the banana strawberry flavor! And it totally can still be used! :)

  37. Twins!!!! I’m shocked you guys haven’t landed a twinning role yet. You should have been front runners for The Parent Trap. Clearly you guys are better actors (or at least more sober…I think) than LindsLo!

    • Girl, we have a call back to an audition we went to the other day to play identical twins, so… SOON! Perhaps SOONER rather than later we will have our twinning role! 😉

  38. My weakness was always brown sugar cinnamon. I haven’t had one in about 25 years. Thank you :-)

  39. Omg this video was so stinkin cute! That was hilarious with the four utensils in the bowl, haha! Oh, and HOORAY for a vegan on your show!!! Woohoo! Adorable pic of you and your sister too. :)

  40. I can’t stop laughing! She is vegan but has more muscles than you :) I can see she knows where to get her proteins. I look forward to knowing more about her diet. You girls make such a great couple!

    • RIGHT?!?!?! I just sent Steph this comment, because it’s downright hysterical! Her guns are ginormous. You should see her in the gym, she AMAZES ME!! 😉 We will definitely do a follow-up what Steph eats post!

  41. Wanna ship me some for my birthday???!! 😉 I have GOT to try sunwarrior… I keep saying it and I need to break down and DO IT.

    • When is your birthday?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!??! AND YES YOU NEED TO TRY SUN WARRIOR – it’s the best one on the market, HANDS DOWN – and I have tried THEM ALL!

  43. Oh man! I used to love the strawberry ones with the sprinkles! But that was so long ago…..I haven’t had one in years! I love the use of SunWarrior powder….it’s my absolute favorite. :)

    • I just loved the vanilla frosting with the sprinkles part of the strawberry pop tarts… The strawberries were just too much for me, lol.

And Sun Warrior is downright the best, right! So delicious :)

  44. OMG Pop Tarts!! That is a seriously blast from the blast. And Holy Birthdays Batman!! Happy Birthday ladies!!! xox

    • RIGHT?! Blast From The Past for sure. OMG Now I want to watch that movie, you know, the one with Brendan Fraiser?!

  45. Yes I have a baby sister! She’s the best!! EVERYONE likes her! Unlike me :-)

Maybe I’ve had a pop tart, but I’ve deleted the memory. If I did it was probably cherry, do they make that flavor?

Stephanie sounds exactly like Maya Angelo to me. Everyone liked her too…

    • No one likes you? I find that VERY hard to believe!!!! And how on earth can you delete the memory of sinking your teeth into delicious pop tarts!!! Pah-leeze! LOL!

  46. Great post! Happy birthday!!! :)

  47. You two weren’t born yet when Full House was cast, silly! Otherwise you’d be shoo-ins.
You know it is my birthday week? My birthday is Friday – July 25th, baby!
I find pop-tarts to be absolutely disgusting. A local deli makes homemade ones. They’re not Gigi-approved, but they are so much healthier than the store-bought ones. And they taste better too!

    • LOL!!! Yes we were born, we were! However, I probably shouldn’t ADMIT TO THAT because it shows our ages! LOL!!!

AND OMG OMG OMG THEN HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU TOO! There are for YOU! I should edit my post and say that these are dedicated to you as well!! :)

      What are your BDAY PLANS!?

  48. Happy birthday to all!!

I used to love me some poptarts! But what they’re made of, and at 200 empty calories each– no thank you! Love this alternative!

    • Ugh, right?! NO THANKS… I don’t even think I would say THANKS if someone offered me one! LOL! I’d go EW GROSS, NO!!!! Ah ha, and throw it on the ground! 😉

  49. I saw someone eating a poptart yesterday and then I was strangely craving one?? But like I would never because they are so full of junk EW. Now I have to try these omgggg.

    • So weird how life works – You see someone eating pop tarts, you want pop tarts and then you come on over here and see a pop tart re-creation! It’s FATE! lol!!! MAKE THESE BIDDIES asap! 😛

  50. I just want to say you’re pretty awesome :) Not only because this recipe sounds like a delicious [but much healthier] version of a pop tart, which by the way, is not readily available here in the Netherlands, but also because you had me laughing at the beginning of this post. Haha, thanks for sharing! I’m definitely pinning to save for later cooking adventures :) My mind is still reeling because I didn’t realise there could be a not horrible for you pop tart!

    • :) You totally just made me smile!!!!! I am thrilled you stopped by, and hope you come back every Tuesday! I hope you try this recipe and enjoy it as much as Steph and I did… I could make and eat these every single day for the rest of my life, that’s for sure! 😉 I am glad crappy pop tarts are NOT available to you in the Netherlands!

  51. I have pop tarts stashed in the basement. It’s for emergency ‘n stuff.

  52. Great pop tarts! Really fun recipe. And thoroughly fun read, and video, as always. Great to meet your twin sister. 😉

    • Thanks John! I think you should re-create these on your blog and take prettier pictures than mine! LOL!

  53. I was never into pop tarts… don’t know why. But gotta tell you.. I’m SUPER impressed that you were able to make such a healthy riff on them!

  54. Happy Birthday! Look at you and Stephanie’s guns, whoohooo Pop Tart eating!

  55. I love making my own pop tarts. They seriously taste so much better than store bought ones. Just not as convenient.

  56. I used to love PopTarts when I was little. What a cool spin on an old treat!

  57. Noooo Iw ant the sugary ones!!! :( You’re trying to rip me off!!! I have no self discipline.. I’ve already deduced that – when I see tres leches I’m weak and my heart palpitates.. I’ve been good the last few days but weekends are a nightmare and I’m having a girls night Saturday — Thankfully I’ll be sticking to straight whiskey or wine but still deserts are my weakness.!! I used to love pop tarts as a kid I don’t eat them anymore though I can’t eat them and not feel guilty. Lol. Umm Stephanie’s got GUNS YO! Damn I don’t think both of my hands could cup those whoa.. Lol. Happy Belated birthday to your sister!! You two look lovely together :) Have a great one GiGi! -Iva

  58. Yum yum yum!!! Can’t wait to try these out – love me some pop tarts!

  59. I almost couldn’t figure out who was who!! I absolutely hate Poptarts, usually, but now I think I want me some! Loved Sister, Sister!

  60. Oh yum! I used to LOVE s’mores pop tarts as a treat but haven’t had them in forever. Your version sounds delicious! #wowlinkup

  61. Happy birthday to everyone!!!! These Pop Tarts looks so dang yummy and I’m loving the protein powder crust. FABULOUS!

  62. HAPPY ONE TO ALL & those bicep guns!!!!! :)

As I said in the YouTube comment – brown sugar cinnamon was my fave!!! I checked out the label not too long ago – just my need to want to try them again – Ummmmmmm, I still want to but rather have my weekend treat cookies! :)

If you make them I will come! 😉

  63. I’m a twin but my sister and I are fraternal twins. If I were a pop tart I would be chocolate or red velvet. I’m just glad I’m not really fond of them. #wowlinkup

  64. Happy birthday!! I didn’t know that you don’t eat all of those things, interesting!

  65. Oooh Happy Birthday!!
Enjoy lots of birthday pop-tarty goodness!

    Choc Chip Uru

  66. Full House! I don’t even know Sisters, Sisters but is there seriously anything that could top Full House? <- This is a rhetorical question obviously.
Onto the Pop-Tarts: Not that I'd ever eaten one of those before because hey, they're another one of those – and in this case fortunate I'd guess – foods not sold over here. Most people wouldn't know what you're talking about. Either way, I like the idea of reinventing old favourites the healthy way though I'll admit I'm not sure which version my stomach would handle better. Because I might be the only person out there who – as pure as the ingredients in it might be – can't handle even a scoop of SunWarrior at once. More than a little at a time and my digestive organ thanks me with a pregnancy belly. Sorry for TMI. It's a pity.

    • Ah ha ha! There is never too much TMI to me! I seriously have so many stomach issues, so I GET IT!!!!!

  67. Hahaha you girls are SO cute and now I have the sister, sister theme song stuck in my head 😉 Ohhh the 90s were such a wonderful time!

I don’t think I’ve ever actually had a pop tart. My mom wouldn’t buy them for us (not because she was super health conscious, she was just cheap haha) but your idea looks SO good!

  68. I want your tart-twin’s biceps. Holy hot-tart! Speaking of… I’d be a spicy chocolate tart. Meowwwww!

  69. Loving these super high-protein pop tarts, perfect as a post-workout snack!

  70. Poptarts at home? Wow, fabulous. My boys will love me forever. You are so cute….your toilet paper pun cracked me up, lol!

  71. I wonder what Tia and Tamera are up to now… Ahh I’m reminiscing! Thank you for that 😉 And this amazing recipe! It’s happening when my damn avocado dehardens!

Is there a ginger poptart? That would be me.

    • Tia and Tamera actually have a show on TV right now! (Or maybe just one of them, ha ha)… But man, Sister, Sister still airs on TV too… So yeah, time to have a marathon! lol!

OMG a GINGER pop tart? Like…. Ginger from a sushi restaurant?

  72. Such good photos! Not a poptart fan but if they made a watermelon one… Don’t know how it would work but it sure sounds good!

    • Good photos?!?!?!? OMG OMG OMG did you just compliment my photos! LOL! Well, I am officially in love with you, LOL!

And a watermelon pop tart? I am surprised there currently isn’t one!

  73. Whew this looks amazing! But I’ll have to do some major kitchen stock up to get even half of these ingredients…you guys are so much fun…happy birthday!

  74. I LOVED Sister, Sister! I totally forgot about that show, haha! This recipe looks genius! Who’d have thought you could create healthy pop tart’s? I’ve actually only tried them a couple times, but didn’t see what all the fuss was about. I’m guessing the US version tastes different from the UK’s lame attempt :p Probably a good thing. The last thing I need is another sugar addiction, lol!

    • The US version tastes different because WE LOVE OUR TRANS FATTY ACIDS and HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SRYUP! LOL!!!!!!

  75. Hi GiGi,
What a tasty and satisfying treat! It will be a hit at any party! Thank you so much for sharing this amazingly creative, healthy and delicious pop tart recipe at the Healthy, Happy, Green and Natural Party Blog Hop. I’m pinning and tweeting this too!

  76. Shhh…don’t tell…I can’t believe I am admitting this, but I have purchased PopTarts on a rare occasion. My youngest son loves them. Maybe he’ll like the healthy version?
